Condition Overview

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), also called Environmental Illness or Chemical Intolerance, is a condition where exposure to low levels of chemicals causes significant symptoms. For MCS sufferers, finding safe clothing is often one of the biggest daily challenges. Common reactions include headaches, brain fog, skin rashes, breathing difficulties, and fatigue when exposed to chemical-treated fabrics.

Common Clothing Triggers

These are fabric, finish, and construction factors that may worsen symptoms for some people.

Formaldehyde
Used in wrinkle-resistant finishes, can off-gas and cause severe reactions
Synthetic Dyes
Chemical pigments that can leach onto skin, especially when wet
Flame Retardants
Applied to meet safety standards but can trigger MCS symptoms
Optical Brighteners
UV-reactive chemicals that make fabrics appear whiter
Fabric Softener Residue
Persistent fragrance chemicals that remain after washing
Sizing Chemicals
Industrial processing chemicals used to shape and finish fabrics
Synthetic Fibers
Polyester, nylon, and acrylic release microplastics and chemicals
Rubber & Latex
Elastic components often contain chemical accelerators and allergens

Care Tips

Small routine changes can reduce exposure to irritants and residues.

Air Out Before First Wear
Hang new items outside or in a clean, well-ventilated room for 24-48 hours to release any minimal packaging odors
Wash with Safe Detergent
Use fragrance-free options like plain baking soda, unscented castile soap, Seventh Generation Free & Clear, or Branch Basics.|
Extra Rinse Cycle
un an additional rinse cycle to ensure all detergent residue is removed
Avoid Fabric Softener
Never use fabric softener, dryer sheets, or scented products - these leave chemical residues that defeat the purpose of chemical-free clothing
Line Dry When Possible
If weather permits, line drying outdoors helps maintain fabric purity and avoids dryer sheet contamination from shared machines
Store in Clean Environment
Keep your Cottonique items separate from chemically-treated clothing to prevent cross-contamination.
