What Does Cottonique's GOTS Certification Mean?

Hailed as "the gold standard for organic cotton certification"(www.nytimes.com). The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized as the world's most rigorous organic textile standard. Our GOTS Certification covers the complete supply chain from:

  • Raw materials — Sourced from GOTS-certified suppliers.
  • Knitting (PR0015) — In-house fabric knitting using certified organic yarn.
  • Manufacturing (PR0016) — Cut, sew, and finishing of certified organic products.
  • Wastewater treatment — All wet-processing facilities operate functional wastewater treatment systems.
  • pH requirements — Finished products must fall within a skin-compatible pH range of 4.0–7.5.
  • Colorfastness testing — Products meet minimum standards for wash, perspiration, and rubbing fastness.
  • Shrinkage limits — Maximum of 5% for woven goods and 8% for knitted goods.
  • Social criteria — Fair wages, safe working conditions, no child labor, and freedom of association.
  • Environmental management — Documented policies for waste minimization and responsible chemical use.
  • Full traceability — Chain-of-custody documentation from farm to finished product.

This isn't just about the fiber; it's about every chemical, every process, and every worker involved.

What is GOTS Certification?

GOTS, or the Global Organic Textile Standard, is an internationally recognized certification that verifies textiles are made with organically grown fibers and processed under strict environmental and social criteria. To be GOTS-certified, products must use certified organic fibers and meet rigorous standards throughout the entire supply chain—from farming and harvesting to spinning, dyeing, finishing, and manufacturing. This includes prohibiting toxic chemicals, formaldehyde, heavy metals, and harmful dyes, as well as enforcing ethical labor practices and wastewater treatment requirements. GOTS certification ensures textiles are genuinely organic, safe for sensitive skin, and responsibly produced from start to finish.

The Journey to GOTS-Certification

Essential Layer Inc.(ELI), Cottonique’s parent company and the driving force behind our hypoallergenic products, acquired its GOTS Certification.

In our continuous pursuit of creating the best hypoallergenic clothing, we take a deliberate approach from the very beginning—sourcing raw materials exclusively from GOTS-Certified suppliers, investing in a bigger and more advanced owned manufacturing facility, and developing innovative processes that avoid harmful chemicals. These collective efforts led to our successful completion of the Global Organic Textile Standard assessment, a true testament to our continuous commitment to producing clothing free from harmful chemicals.
