Condition Overview

Fiber allergy, also called textile dermatitis or fabric allergy, is a reaction to synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, acrylic, or rayon. Some people also react to wool. The reaction can be to the fiber itself or chemicals used in processing. Symptoms include itching, rash, or hives where synthetic fabric contacts skin.

Common Clothing Triggers

These are fabric, finish, and construction factors that may worsen symptoms for some people.

Polyester
Most common trigger fiber in modern clothing
Nylon
Second most common synthetic allergen
Acrylic
Causes reactions in sensitive individuals
Rayon/Viscose
Processing chemicals can trigger responses
Spandex/Elastane/Lycra
Elastic fibers cause contact dermatitis
Wool
Natural fiber that irritates some people
Synthetic fabric blends
Even small percentages can cause reactions
Polyester thread in seams
Hidden synthetic in "100% cotton" labels

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! We use cotton thread throughout. Many "100% cotton" products use polyester thread, which can cause reactions
|We don't use elastic. Our products use drawstring waistbands to avoid all synthetic materials
Symptoms include itching, rash, or hives where synthetic fabric contacts skin. A dermatologist can do patch testing to confirm
Washing may reduce some finishes but won't change the fiber itself. If you react to the synthetic fiber, washing won't help.
Yes, fiber sensitivities can develop at any age, often after repeated exposure or during hormonal changes
Unfortunately, cotton is our base material. For cotton allergies, silk or bamboo might be alternatives (consult your doctor)
Most organic cotton still uses polyester thread and synthetic elastic. Cottonique uses cotton thread and drawstring designs—no synthetics anywhere
Start by eliminating the most common triggers (polyester, nylon). Keep a symptom diary noting which fabrics you wore when reactions occurred.

Care Tips

Small routine changes can reduce exposure to irritants and residues.

Check all labels carefully
Even products labeled "100% cotton" may have polyester thread or synthetic elastic bands
Avoid "moisture-wicking" fabrics
These are almost always synthetic fibers (polyester, nylon) that trigger reactions
Watch for hidden synthetics
Many garments use polyester thread even when fabric is cotton
Pre-wash new garments
Wash new pure cotton items before wearing to remove any processing residue
Choose loose-fitting designs
Tight synthetic fabrics trap heat and moisture, worsening reactions
Keep a clothing diary
Track which items cause symptoms to identify your specific triggers
Avoid fabric softeners
These often contain synthetic chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin|Fewer seams mean less polyester thread contact with skin
Consider seamless options
